JOHN W. HETHERINGTON
JOHN W. HETHERINGTON
of counsel to the firm, has extensive corporate and securities
law experience and is widely published in the area of corporate
governance. He also practices in the fields of probate and
estates, estate planning and real estate. He is admitted to
the bar of the states of Connecticut and New York as well
as various Federal Courts.
Mr. Hetherington
received a B.A. from Yale College in 1960 and a J.D. from
Yale Law School in 1963. He was Vice President, Corporate
Secretary and Assistant General Counsel of Westvaco Corporation
(now MeadWestvaco Corporation) from 1978 until his retirement
in 2002. In 1981 he was appointed by the U.S. Securities and
Exchange Commission to its Advisory Committee on Shareholder
Communications where he served during the life of the committee.
He also was a director of the American Society of Corporate
Secretaries, Chairman of the Society's Audit Committee and
Chairman of its Tender Offers Committee.
Mr. Hetherington
participated as a commissioned officer in the Judge Advocate
General's Corps, United States Naval Reserve, until 1992 when
he retired with the rank of captain. He commanded a reserve
unit from 1981 to 1983.
Mr. Hetherington
is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association, the Regional
Bar Association of Stamford/Norwalk, the New Canaan Bar Association,
and Fellow of the Connecticut Bar Foundation.
Long active in community affairs, John Hetherington served
the Town of New Canaan as a member of the Zoning Board of
Appeals, the Planning and Zoning Commission, the Town Council,
and as Chairman of the Board of Assessment Appeals.
In November 2002,
Mr. Hetherington was elected to the Connecticut General Assembly
to represent the 125th District. The new house district covers
most of New Canaan and a portion of Wilton.
